This tutorial gives an overview of the role of
lymphoscintigraphy in Nuclear Medicine. In particular, it emphasizes the ability of this valuable procedure to guide the surgeon in locating the drainage pathways in patients with breast cancer or melanoma and to identify the sentinel node. This tutorial describes the optimal preparation technique for making Ultrafiltered Tc-99m sulfur colloid and gives information regarding injection techniques. After completing this tutorial, attendees will be able to explain the rationale for using this technique, will be able to identify the ideal particle size for colloid particles to insure rapid migration in the lymphatics, will be able to describe in detail the optimal preparation procedure, will be able to describe the optimal injection technique for injecting different categories of patients, and will be familiar with typical colloid distribution patterns in patient studies. |
